Shocking, grotesque and inhuman.
I am very sad such things happen in a country I seem to like. I have absolutely no voice at all left to defend but somehow I think only the most atrocious, ludricrous events seem to make their way to the western media.

i read the post earlier but refrained from posting a comment....anything that I will write here will end up being summed up as a parochial view or politically incorrect.. women continue to be treated shabbily in most of the societies and i don't think it's country-specific .....do not want to talk about religions 'coz i can't claim to know any religion well.

Although the society may treat women shabbily the world over; its worse when the law of the state does that. The one-sidedness of Saudi laws in todays time has no excuses. And they really cant hide behind religious texts here; i'm sure the prophet did not write that!

Radha, agreed....just as i do not approve of state-organized pogroms, i definitely do not agree with state-supported laws like these, Saudi or anywhere else...but my point was having a law on paper in the country (and this happens in several counties including the one i know and love dearly ) and not enforcing it is as big a crime too.......when people here ask me about an India that they can't relate to when they see an urban representation by me because they read something on BBC about a 9 year old girl being married to a stray dog to ward off some kinda evil spell ..i have no explicable answers.....as 666 said, perhaps only such cases are reported by western media......but then I do not blame media either, instead i rather appreciate their stand.....you cant push these cases under carpet and say it happens once in a while, so it's permitted!
