The origins of the term 'left' dates back to seating arrangements of the French National Assembly in the pre-revolution France circa 1780. The nobles called the 'First Estate' used to sit on the President's right while the revolutionaries called the 'Third Estate' were at his left. The connotation has stuck ever since.
