Reviews: A book and A movie

Book:

Name: Winter Haunting
Author: Dan Simmons
Genre: Supernatural
Rating: * * *
Filtrate: The story of Professor Dale Stewart who has called it a day after a broken affair with his student, subsequent divorce and estrangement from wife and daughters, the green slip from his university and a failed suicide attempt. He decides to spend nine months in his childhood town Elm Haven in his childhood buddy Duane’s farmhouse. Duane had died under mysterious circumstances forty years ago, when all the kids were eleven. But he ‘comes’ back to clear a few things.
My tuppence: The setting is extremely spooky. The content is solid and damn scary. If a good director chances upon this book, the celluloid version will surely scare the shit out of everybody. A good read in the night for the black hearts J (I read the scariest part post midnight … honestly … faint hearts/children shouldn’t)

Movie:

Name: The Omen
Rating: * * *
Filtrate: On the 6th day of the 6th month of the 6th year the Devil will send his son on earth. The kid will have a birthmark of 666 on his body and will blah blah blah ..
My tuppence: The content is shitty and trite but the direction, cinematography and sound is par excellence. Truly brilliant. Snow capped churches, foggy freezing cemetery, incessant rains and the simplicity! Money worth spent.

I feel the horror movies these days more concentrate on special effects, lighting and depend on sounds and an eerie ambiance to scare the audiences-less on the plot itself. However a winter haunting sounds interesting, might pick it up.
