! Ob Aye !

I have always been fascinated by catch-phrases… and have honestly applauded innovations in this direction. After reading Arka’s blog on ‘Evolving Lingo’ I concurred that an equally evolved mind ( if not more ) should also attempt at honoring some of the most hilarious, most accepted and the most outrageous catch-phrases in the marketplace( read engineers .. somehow other creeds perform dismally)

Suvarna Padak: Ob Aye.. arre bhai kya, who is the winner … Ob Aye. That’s what it is. The exact origins are uncertain and I would gladly welcome some research on the same ( if you are as busy as a brick layer in Beirut ). Obvious Hai got condensed to Ob Hai which was futher accenticized into Ob Aye( the two words said together, with a stretched last syllable ). I have never known any fad or quirk that gained popularity with such alarming rapidity and an all-encompassing effect as Ob Aye. These tiny words allowed the utterer a presumed air of i-know-it-all. These tiny words allowed the utterer a cool attitude. These tiny words allowed the utterer a smile or a simper from his audience. I was shocked to see even decent, quiet girls use it with frivolity. Unfortunately it died a slow death and appears to have been wiped out completely from the lingua franca of modern day youth. ( Arka, yogesh other COEP ian junta pls pls prove me wrong?? )

Kansya Padak: Haddockisms. The creativity of a ‘squawking popinjay’ or an ‘anamorphic aardvark’; the sheer irrelevance of an ‘ectoplasm’ or a ‘logarithm’; the ferocity of ‘billions of blue bilious blistering barnacles’ or a ‘dictatorial duck-billed diplodocus’; the flippancy of a ‘ fancy dress freebooter’ or a ‘two timing tartar twisters’ makes them the celebrated medium of euphemistic expletive exchange the world over. Voila Herge !

Rajat Padak: To the spirit behind these human endeavours and to the spirit behind their tolerance, acceptance and appreciation ( which I find missing )

If I ever get to work with McCann Eriksson for their Aamir Khan Ads … you know what Aamir would be calling his Coke … ! Ob Aye !

I absolutely have to doff my hat for "Ob Aye". And while the hat's still off my bean, I might as well keep it there for the immortal "saala". Now "saala" is more an auxiliary than a catch phrase, quite like the unpronounceable unctuous garnish on exhorbitantly expensive edibles, than a true "takia kalaam". That however does not take away from the wondrous versatility with which it imparts meanings to the more developed epithets. Try "Bhak saala", "Ob Aye saala", and other such saalas and roll them around your tongue to get a feel...

Dont let ! Ob Aye! go down. Coming to mumbai on 26 Oct - 6 Nov , check out if there are any quizzes to rout.

yuppie ... heres what appeared on him in our newsletter,
NPV- This man has tremendous knowledge about anything at all
in Finance (or so he fiercely claims!) and can be seen shaking
his head vigorously throughout all sorts of classes. Known to be
violently defensive about his ideas, he’s supposedly always
helping the amateurs cut vegetables and make omlettes. For
this guy, the way to a lot of women’s hearts is definitely
through their tummies. Who is he?

we used Biology terms as explitives .... Phrases like 'You Oesophagus' and ' wucherere Bancrofti' would prove to be quite vituperative when delivered right! :p
