Cyclone Nargis

I have been reading all day about Cyclone Nargis which has wreaked havoc in the Irrawaddy delta of Burma. Initial reports estimate over 20,000 dead with almost 50,000 missing. It appears the Burmese military junta is refusing humanitarian aid in the form of troops or self help groups and is only responding to nations it is friendly to - Thailand, Bangladesh and Singapore.

The death toll is something which I cannot quantify. And this made me read up a few things about natural disasters - hurricanes, tsunamis, cyclones, floods, tornados, forest fires, volcanoes, earthquakes, avalanches .. so many arent they! Only goes to say your and my world is indeed snug and fertile.

One interesting thing I read about tsunami which needs to be shared here. A survival tip! In case you are at a beach and the sea water recedes significantly even though its not a low tide, what do you do? My blog friend, run for your life!!

A tsunami wave has a short amplitude (wave height) but very large wavelength (distance of travel). In case the wave's trough hits the shore first, the sea water would recede initially. Some survivors mention hearing a sucking sound as the water recedes. During the Banda-Aceh tsunami, many people actually went out to investigate the water recession or collect dead fish. They never returned.

PS: Tsunami waves travel faster than we can run. Unless you are Jesse Owens.

thats what happened in nagappatinam also, though quite a few lives were saved by a British girl who had studied this phenomenon in school and was able to warn those around her.
