Passion of the Christ
There are some movies I am glad I missed watching in theatres. In fact 90% of my all time favs have been savored in the form of pixellated vignettes of a computer screen in absolute solitude ( read loneliness ) and silence. Schindler’s List, The Exorcist, Gladiator.
P.O.T.C does not enjoy membership of my Hall o’ Fame club but I am still glad I gave it an audience it asks for and rightly deserves. Room lights switched off. Ear phones. Screen close to eyes. I am into the movie.
When it was released I recall world wide castigations on the gory scenes and explicity of tortures. I feel only some scenes truly subscribe to the above arraignment. One scene which almost unbearable was the nailing on the cross part. After unaccountable corporal atrocities Jeshua is made to bear his own cross. As the smirking Roman legionnaires drive the first nail into an outstretched palm, Jesus, in excruciating pain, cries in a flailing voice “My Lord please forgive them” !!!!!!!
The movie is in Aramaic which is strikingly similar to Arabic. I don’t know either but they both sound similar.
‘Aloi Aloi sabachtani’ … Jesus of Nazareth’s last words in Aramaic. Translated in English that would be ‘My Lord, My Lord..Why have you forsaken me ?’
Well.. My Lord shalst thou forsake me too?
