Israel-Palestine Conflict - A Primer

Finally I have some clarity on the Israel-Palestine conflict. What shocks me are the complexities which are clearly discernable even with my negligible understanding of the subject. The stories from Gaza, West Bank which hitherto were ignored now appear so important-to-know. This post is devoid of any views, opinions and suggestions on the issue as my target audience is people totally ignorant of the half a century old crisis. Read on.

Disclaimer: The following are not proprietary thoughts and have been mainly sourced from Wikipedia and free webpages. In my portrayal, every effort has been made to maintain neutrality and objectivity.

Pre 1945: The holocaust causes all the Jews to scatter around Europe. Meanwhile, Arabs have occupied all of Palestine and Jerusalem.

1948: The newly formed United Nations passes a resolution forming the state of Israel by demarcating territories for Jews and Arabs (See map).
The Jews accept this division and war ravaged homeless Jew diaspora from all over the world start returning to the newly created state. However, the Arabs supported by neighboring states of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt blatantly refuse this and immediately attack the 1 day old Israel. In 1949 ceasefire was declared, Israel had gained an additional 23.5% of the Mandate territory west of the Jordan River. Jordan, for its part, held the large mountainous areas of Judea and Samaria, which became known as the West Bank. Egypt took control of a small strip of land along the coast, which became known as the Gaza Strip.

1967: The famous six day war. Fearing, the neighboring states were going to launch a combined attack from all sides, Israel declared a pre-emptive war on Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. The Israeli Air Force showed its might by achieving complete air superiority within hours, not a single Egyptian airplane even took to air!. Israel had recaptured the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Southern Lebanon and Golan Heights which is under Israeli occupation till this day (See Map).
1987: Yasser Arafat leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization declared the formation of the state of Palestine. All Arab countries recognized Palestine however Israel immediately rejected it. Many countries of the world, including India recognize Palestine. However Palestine has no map since there are no territories under its sovereignty.

Present: Israel has signed peace treaties with Jordan and Egypt. Tensions are still rife with Lebanon and Syria. The struggle of the Palestinians continue for their freedom and rightful recognition. Internal power struggles in Palestine and Lebanon have hampered the peace process since some political parties like the Hamas and Hezbollah demand the complete extermination of Israel.

So that’s the hyper condensed story. Innumerable lives have been lost on both sides. Let Peace Prevail.

unfortunately, the conflict has much more to do with religion than anything else. To justify my point, have a look at some of the facts below.
1)The area of Isreal is approx 20,000 sq km which is like saying 100x20(or approximately a 15km patch of land between mumbai and pune 15*120).It is slightly more than kuwait with an area of 17k sqkm. Even Iraq is 20 times bigger than Isreal.I dont even want to comment on the size of Palestine.
2)Its total population is around 7 million. This is 1 million more than the much publicised figure of 6 million jews murdered during WW2.

From a context of india all these figures are so easily dwarfed when you consider 100 million devotees having a bath in Dev-Prayag, that you feel whats wrong with the world!
This proves how important religion is in most parts of the world.

Great inputs there anonymous. Totally agree.

True I like animals, trees, micro-organisms & celestial bodies because none of them have any religions! In his evolutionary triumph which has landed him the top echelon of the food chain, man has adorned a self-destructing attribute called religion.

Ha. if some intelligent life form in Andromeda galaxy were to be observing human proceedings with interest they would be amused. Humans kill humans because we dont understand why.

Informative post....i have been doing my own reading on the issue ever since i watched the TV film called Twist of Fate (also called Pursuit some times back) ...u forgot to include the 1973 Yom Kippur war b/w Israel and Arab nations including Egypt and Syria in Sinai and Golan heights...the war's imp to mention here coz it led to the "peace process" (!!!!) between Israel and Egypt...making Egypt the first Arab nation (tho' Turkey was the first Muslim-majority nation to recognize Israel) to recognize Israel... ...

If it wud not have been for religion, man wud have been murdering for some other reason.....as u said ..."Humans kill humans because we dont understand why."

finally, a hi!!! jumped here from kanishka's and jas' blogs....:)

This all stems back to Abraham trying to force the promise of God of a child by having Ishmael (the muslim line.) And Isaac, the child of the promise (God's promised line). Because Abraham sinned and tried to make the promise come true himself we know see after many, many generations the physical battle between God's promised lineage (from Isaac down) and Abraham's attempt to help God (Ishmael, muslim heritage). It depicts in the natural what is going on in the spiritual. Satan's attempt to wipe out God and anything to do with God. There will be a 7 year treaty signed, Israel will rebuild the Temple and commence worship again. The Anti-christ will be revealed thus God's judgement on the earth. And only those who trusted in the Way, the Truth, and the Life will be saved...(Jesus Christ)..To Him be the glory!! Amen.
