Top Ten Rock Bands

The 10 best rock bands ever
A purely subjective list of the groups that changed music forever

source: MSNBC

Aside: The council of the Orcs at Mordor would have let it pass but the operative phrase was 'rock bands'. With due permission from my dark lord Sauron, I decided to spew some caustic revelations.

1. The Beatles

{ uummm. . . well . . . okie accepted }

2. The Rolling Stones

{ havent heard and followed band history comprehensively so ... accepted }

3. U2

{ Bono Vox! you sure have found what you were loooking for. If you ask me though, i would rate you and your german submariners certainly beyond rank 20 }

4. The Grateful Dead

{ Sorry late Jerry! your band name scores no brownie points with me. somewhere in the twenties. }

5. Velvet Underground

{ Havent heard any track .. so no comments :-( }

6. Led Zeppelin

{ Absolutely ! ! wouldnt be disappointed if Page/Plant/Bonham/Jones actually move up a few ranks }

7. Ramones

{ Abbe chal hata saawan ki ghata. For the benefit of those who dont relish bollywood lingua franca, this is outrageous. If the compilers of this list take offence may i request them to further humble their misplaced music tastes by asking them to rest their eyes on my profile pic }

8. Pink Floyd

{ Eighth ??? I mean seriously, on behalf of the million Floydians across the globe this qualifies as blasphemy. I and my Dark Lord are of the opinion that PF should never appear in a top ten at all. They are beyond comparision. }

9. Bob Marley and the Waliers

{ Rock bands ?? gimme a break. The Rastafarian doyen deserves to be in the top ten influential music but not under this particular taxonomy }

10. Sly and the Family Stone

{ Ooaauuk .. Bluurrpp .. ooaauk, someone plss gimme an anti-emetic .. I feel SICK. My Dark Lord( who has taken it better than me ) reasons that human being often indulge in something called as bribing. Wow! even me and my damned Orc brethren can form a band and feature in the top ten }

The Eagles:

It is not surprising if the first song that all guitarists learn is Hotel California. For the trend-setter that it was in its times, it still retains its original melody and unparalled (yet noiseless) guitar, be it the tuneful haunting note with which it starts or the fast chords with which it ends.

They had everything - a drummer who could sing as well as keep the beats and win the grammies too, another vocalist who could modulate his voice sweeter than Lata's at an age of 50, and what not. The secret behind success can be explained in just one word - versatality. Who would dream of Metallica or Guns n' Roses playing a soft and melodious song like Love Will Keep Us Alive, or Iron Maiden playing a country song like Tequila Sunrise, or Led Zeppelin playing a lively one like Take It Easy, or Deep Purple playing a love song like Best Of My Love, or AC/ DC playing a heart-healer like Desperado, or Kenny Rogers playing the perfect rock song like Hotel California - but with the Eagles, you can expect everything and that is what makes them unique amogst the stand of all bands. To add to it, they are not just a jack of all, but are 'masters' of all. I can arguably say that their rock songs are by far the best and so are their soft/ country/ love songs.

The essence of each song is its theme - based on social concern, drugs, anti-excess cocaine, persuading a depressed lover, attempting a mind-change in a criminal, so on and so forth. The lyrics of all of them can qualify for poem-books and give poets a run for their money. A band which had perhaps the best-looking members, decided not to make any videos until their last album before break-up (The Long Run) in 1979. Even the videos made for that one were studio recordings. All available other videos of older songs are live ones (like the acoustic version of Hotel California from Hell Freezes Over, which has become quite popular and I don't like the fact because many haven't heard the actual, electric Hotel California which gained world fame). True to their nature, they chose not to even take advantage of their good looks for impressing the girls and they seldom showed their faces in even their album-covers (even if they did, they made sure they were looking their worst in them). No crazy stuff and dancing on the stage, no additional hype - all their popularity was on only one thing - pure music.

In the BD Detox Centre (The Telegraph), which is a get-a-grip of the 60s/ 70s habit programme, Hotel California was voted as the most popular song with over 95% of the votes (and all other songs by all bands in those two decades managed to fit in only the rest 5%).

Being a legend with so many incomparable songs of various genres in only 6 albums and 8 years is not piece of cake. But well, if a band like this prevails for 30 years like many other greats who are counted in the same league have, it could have become by far the best-selling band the world would have ever seen for the next one million generations to come - and to avoid the monopoly, God decided to break it up for a 14-year long haitus with vicious tirades between the band-members. But in the end, Hell did freeze over and they came back with more :-)

It is of course, well deserved that The Eagles Greatest Hits Vol 1 (1971-'75) has surpassed Michael Jackson's Thriller to become the best-selling album in the world in any category (and they are followed by Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin IV), and the only album to receive Platinum ratings by Warner Entertainment. Its also not astonishing that they are the only band to have 2 albums which have sold over 15 million, and both of them are in the top 15 best-selling albums of the world (Greatest Hits Vol 1 and Hotel California). For the record, they are also the third best-selling band of all time (after the Beatles and Led Zeppelin), though for the reasons mentioned above, I rate them far higher than those. And they are also the sixth highest paid entertainers in the world (including actors, presentators, musicians, etc).

Hats off to the Eagles - they will always remain the greatest band in the world for me.

Well....the topic is too subjective! Music is such a personal taste, I find it hard to list my own top 10 bands, an overall general list-not possible!!

But yeah I agree even in my music folder, the genre for Floyd is- Different League! N hey they missed out Pearl Jam which is one of my favorites too.

@purnima: No list can ever be compiled which can be called 'The Top Ten'. My castigations were mainly against some inclusions like Ramones, and that never ever heard Sly band.
