My Art Will Go On....

My Art Will Go On.....that's what Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) would have sung were he alive today. I chanced upon his painting 'Massacre of the Innocents' and I ended up with full 15 minutes trying to figure what's it all about. At the end of it, I was mighty pleased with two people. Rubens and myself.

I confess here the title of the painting was the beacon which guided my traversal through Rubens' mind. Without knowing that its something to do with a massacre of innocents, I seriously doubt wether I would have been pleased with myself. So let me write out the ruminations of my mind in that intense 15 min period..

First thing I observed was that Arnold Schwarzeneggar on the right with that blue cloak protecting his dignity, holding a baby high up in his hands. He appears to be quite a babe smasher, as I saw three victims lying below. After this, I was completely at a loss about the rest. It took me a lot of time to figure out whats that big red robe doing there. Only on straining my eyes, I saw it all. I saw a woman's breast! Lo and behold.. things fell in place. So the woman is wearing that red thing, probably torn by Arnold no. 2. Closer inspection showed that Arnold no. 2 is tugging the baby's white 'diaper' (or whatever babies wore during those days to achieve that purpose). Another man with a sword or equivalent is wonderfully posed to strike at this babe. Now here I still can't figure out whats that green thing there trying to restrain this man. I can see two hands, but no torso. Further behind, is a greek soldier wearing a helmet pulling a woman's hair. And further behind, there is something in white robes.. cant figure that out either.

All in all, I am blown away by the profundity of Rubens. Will this be the match to light/ ignite/ blaze my artistic fire? Or will I suffer from a massive art attack?

"Art Attack" I say...
Atrocities on women and children (innocents), thats all I can see...but why paint such a, if not gory, violent picture? To create an awareness about what was going on in those times????? Tell me more.
